SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Wednesday marks the fifth day of the observance of Kwanzaa, when African-American communities celebrate the seven principles of Kwanzaa. The cultural holiday began the day after Christmas, embracing the principals of unity and creativity.
Springfield community activist Neel Adul-Hameed told 22News how the community applies today’s Kwanzaa principal, “Purpose.” Adul-Hameed explained that “We’re trying to help people with problems like diabetes, obesity, vascular disorders. So it helps restore them to better health, and that’s something we’ve done for a few years now.”
Kwanzaa’s seventh and final day is Friday, New Year’s Day. The principal for the final day is called Imani, which is Swahili for “Faith.”
