SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A convicted murderer from Springfield won’t be getting a new trial. The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court rejected an appeal to give Steven Gonzalez a new trial to reduce the verdict from first degree murder.
Gonzalez killed Alexander Gauthier in October 2008 by shooting him in the face at close range with a sawed-off shotgun. Court documents say the victim, Gauther, controlled drug sales in the low-rise apartment buildings on the 200 block of Locust Street, and that Gonzalez was a heroin addict.
In 2012, Gonzalez was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole. Gonzalez appealed because he said that he was denied an effective lawyer.
