EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – Easthampton Police arrested a 36-year-old Holyoke man Tuesday afternoon after deploying “Stop Sticks” on Mountain Road.

According to Easthampton Police Capt. Robert Alberti, around 2:37 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the Pizza House package store on Union Street for a suspected larceny. When the officers arrived, the alleged suspect, Erick Matos of Holyoke, drove off.

Due to the weather conditions on Tuesday, police conducted a low speed pursuit on Holyoke Street and attempted to stop Matos. However, they called off the chase because of the dangerous road conditions.

Capt. Alberti said Matos started to drive faster on Mountain Road while allegedly passing into oncoming traffic. So Easthampton Police closed Mountain Road and used “Stop Sticks,” forcing Matos to pull over.

Matos was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Failure to stop for police
  • Shoplifting by concealing merchandise
  • Negligent operation of a motor vehicle
  • Marked lanes violation
  • No inspection sticker
  • Speeding

Capt. Alberti added that Matos is a suspect in other larcenies.
