CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) — Long before Captain Ahab went down with the ship in “Moby Dick”, there was a real life Whale of a tale that Inspired the Herman Melville classic.

For most movie goers, the monster sea beast “In The Heart of the Sea” creates more comparisons with “Jaws”

I expected a crew member to say “We’ll need a bigger boat”.

Unfortunately, director Ron Howard steers his unwieldly epic into a storm of dreary dramatics.

Not even with the resourceful Howard at the helm, can Chris Hemsworth give a barely passable performance.

The writers couldn’t resist inserting a dash of “Mutiny on the Bounty”. There’s no love lost between first mate Hemsworth and his snooty Captain Benjamin Walker.

Since most of the stodgy characters are borderline plastic, our sympathies are firmly on the side of the Whale.

He goes about dismantling the ill-fated vessel to help your 3-D glasses capture some vivid images.

But dramatically, you wish someone would have thrown the writers a life jacket.

Less of Chris Hemsworth and more of the Whale would have made for a far more stirring seagoing adventure.,

“In The Heart of the Sea” sinks far below expectations to surface with only 2 stars.

I’m sure Captain Ahab would have harpooned Ron Howard’s movie, compared with the classic that came later..
