Do you know your retail rights?

Be careful when donating to charity this holiday season

Shoppers rush through the entrance to the Academy Sports+Outdoors at 5:00 a.m. in the Chimney Rock Shopping Center on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, in Odessa, Texas. Early numbers aren’t out yet on how many shoppers headed to stores on Thanksgiving, but it’s expected that more than three times the number of people will venture out to shop on the day after the holiday known as Black Friday. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Attorney General’s office wants to make sure you know your retail rights this holiday season, and how to give to charity without falling for a scheme.

Only one person attended Wednesday’s event at the Springfield City Library. Representatives talked about warranties, gift certificates, and return policies.

The AG’s office offers the following tips before you donate to a cause over the holidays:

  • Verify the name, address, and telephone number of the charity.
  • Look for a specific description of how the funds will be used.
  • See if your donation is tax deductible.
  • See how much of the donation goes to charity; a paid fundraiser may be involved.
