SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Recognition Wednesday for Springfield organ and tissue donors at Baystate Medical Center.
Melissa Delgado was 21 when she was killed in a traffic accident in Springfield 15 years ago. Melissa had made provisions to donate her Corneas, heart valves and her skin. Members of Melissa’s family received roses during an appreciation ceremony at Baystate Medical Center.
Agnes Delgado, Melissa’s mother, told 22News, “Tears started to run down my face because the only satisfaction I have she is on a voyage that is for life. While she donated he organs, I see it as giving life at the same time she is traveling the world.”
A 12 year old girl in Quebec, Canada received Melissa’s corneas. Melissa’s heart valves have saved a Boston resident’s life. Members of Melissa’s family urged others to also become donors providing a gift of life.
Grisel Delgado, Melissa’s Aunt, told 22News, “Be a donor because you’re saving another life. It’s a good thing she’s out there and one day we’ll meet the people she donated her body to.”
Wednesday’s was the 3rd annual rose ceremony honoring organ at tissue donors at Baystate Medical Center.
