Combat roles being opened to women in the military

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Pentagon will now open all combat jobs to women, including positions in special operations units & infantry.

NBC reports women will now be able to help fill some of the 220,000 roles that are currently only open to men.  Previously, the Marines led a research study to determine whether female Marines could serve in combat roles.

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced women in every branch of the military, including the Marines, will be eligible for any job in which they are qualified.

It’s actually good. It lets women know who actually do want to become something in the army, that it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman, you can become anything you want to be,” said Yvonne Hall of Springfield.

Women will be allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars, and lead infantry soldiers into combat.

They can also serve as green berets and navy seals. The new policy will take effect at the start of the new year.
