SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Perhaps nowhere in western Massachusetts was the spirit of the season more evident Wednesday night than at the Springfield Rescue Mission.
Hundreds of homeless, elderly, disabled and people in crisis sat down for a Thanksgiving banquet with all the fixin’s.
The idea is to offer an opportunity to have a meal in a family-style setting, and perhaps a serving of inspiration.
Executive director Ron Willoughby said, “Maybe we’re giving somebody an edge on dealing with a situation that has been pulling them down. Maybe somehow we’re going to give them some opportunity to rise up and see that we’re offering a hand up, not a hand out.”
The Rescue Mission also delivered hundreds of meals to shut-ins across the city. They’ll also serve Thanksgiving breakfast Thursday morning.
This will be the Rescue Mission’s last meal at Bliss Street before moving to Mill Street next year.
