Police trainees volunteer to unload food to food pantry

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Trainees from the current class of the Massachusetts State Police Academy were volunteering across the Commonwealth on Wednesday, and 22News caught up with some in Springfield.

Trainees joined students from Minnechaug and Cathedral High Schools, as well as the Sheriff’s Department at Springfield’s Open Pantry, as they unloaded all of the food items that were generously donated by you during the Rock 102 Mayflower Marathon. The food, which filled three tractor trailers, will help feed our neighbors when they need it most.

Candace Larger of Springfield’s Open Pantry told 22News, “A lot of people have to choose between their heat and eating and so that’s what we’re here for. We are that safety net for people who are struggling.”

The Open Pantry fed 36,000 people in western Massachusetts last year, and close to half of them were children.
