Roof-top unit caught fire at Smith & Wesson in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield firefighters quickly put out a fire on a roof-top at Smith & Wesson in Springfield Wednesday night.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield Fire Commissioner told 22News that the fire started in a ventilation unit on the roof of Building “Q” on the grounds of the legendary gun maker.

“There was an accumulation of residue in the duct work,” Leger told 22News.  “Our firefighters opened up the roof to make sure the fire was out.”

Leger said fires like this one happen occasionally in the buildings equipped with dust collection units.  He said he believed Building “Q” is an area where guns are tested.

Smith & Wesson’s address is 2100 Roosevelt Avenue in Springfield.  Building “Q” is located off Performance Boulevard.

22News was not allowed on the property.

Smith & Wesson is the legendary gun manufacturer that was founded in 1852 and based in Springfield.

The company employs more than 1,700 full time employees.
