Car accidents more likely during Thanksgiving travel

AAA reminds drivers to not drink and drive or text and drive.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Wednesday is not just the busiest travel day, Progressive Insurance found accidents also increase by 25 percent the day before Thanksgiving.

Wednesday night is also when many people meet up with high school friends and family at parties or at bars, which could lead to dangers if they then drive home.

“People need to make sure they have a designated driver for the holiday, certainly people are celebrating,” Sandra Marsian from AAA said. “Let them sleep at your house, don’t let people drive if they’ve been drinking. We always like to reinforce that, especially this time of year.”

AAA is also reminding people not to text and drive. Construction crews in western Mass might not be working but there are still cones and barriers up that could be a road hazard, especially to distracted drivers.

The safest day to travel this holiday week is on the Monday after Thanksgiving.
