Monte’s Walk to raise money for food bank

Last year, Monte's Walk raised more than $66,000

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A western Massachusetts radio host, a congressman and dozens of people marched for a cause Tuesday.

There are a lot of food insecure households in western Massachusetts and local radio host Monte Belmonte wanted to do something about that.

He along with Congressman Jim McGovern and the executive director of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts led a crowd of marching people from Northampton all the way here to Greenfield. That’s 26 miles in total. The goal: to raise money along the way for the western Massachusetts food bank.

Monte Belmonte of 93.9 The River told 22News, “Well, food insecurity hasn’t gone away in the last year and I was looking to go on a beautiful walk through the Pioneer Valley. So, I said why not do it again and see if we can raise as much money, if not, more than we raised last year for the Food Bank of Western Mass?”

Last year, Monte’s Walk raised more than $66,000 for the food bank. When we spoke with them Tuesday afternoon they had already raised $53,000. This is the sixth year they’ve held this event.
