WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Construction on the Memorial Avenue Rotary is scheduled to continue past Saturday’s deadline.
MassDOT spokeswoman Amanda Skahan said they are still holding to the deadline, but realize the contractor still has more work to do.
According to MassDOT, the ramps between Route 5 North and South and the rotary will be closed “as needed” between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. from Monday November 30 through Friday December 4. Crews will be installing a guard rail and will be cleaning up the area around the rotary.
This project began in March, and local businesses are glad it’s finally coming to an end. Rich Spafford, owner of Footit Health Care Store, said it has caused problems in his store.
“It’s been a nightmare for the last four or five months,” Spafford said. “It’s shut down one day and reopened the next so we won’t have customers come in here on one day and then the next day we’ll get bombarded.”
MassDOT told 22News they are waiting for the contractor to submit an extension for the $11 million project. Once that is submitted, any work that still needs to be done will depend on winter weather.
