SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)– Drivers using I-91 North in Springfield had to deal with delays for much of the day Tuesday.
Contractors closed both the State Street onramp and the right lane of I-91 North from the State Street on ramp to Exit 8 (I-291). The closure started at 9:00 A.M., but around 12:30, the center lane of the highway was also closed through downtown, causing traffic to back up at the Longmeadow Curve.
All lanes were re-opened at around 3:00 P.M.
MassDOT says the lane and ramp closure was done so that contractors could pave the newly-widened section of highway. This same closure was in effect last Friday and caused delays for much of the day.
Tuesday’s closures are just a preview to the upcoming lane and ramp closures the MassDOT says are still to come in the next phase of this long-term 91 rehabilitation project. That round of work is scheduled to start this coming winter.
