Agawam apartment heavily damaged in fire

Other apartments in building were not damaged, 2 taken to hospital for smoke inhalation

AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents of an Agawam apartment building had to be evacuated Tuesday morning after a fire in one of the units. Fire Chief Alan Sirois told 22News that they were called to 619 Springfield Street at around 6:40 for the fire in a first-floor apartment.

Sirois said that two people in a neighboring apartment had to be taken to the hospital for inhaling too much smoke, but they are expected to be okay.

The chief said that the apartment where the fire started was badly damaged, but that the remaining apartments in the building were not. The resident of that damaged first-floor apartment will not be able to go home for the time being, while residents of other units can return home.

Sirois said that they are still looking into the cause of the fire, but it does not appear that it was intentionally set.
