“Secret In Their Eyes”

Rated PG-13

1 hour 50 minutes

Julie Roberts, Chiwetel Ejofor, Nicole Kidman

CHICOPEE, Mass (WWLP) — Whenever Hollywood remakes an Oscar winning foreign film, the picture often loses something in the translation.

Whatever magic “Secret In Their Eyes projected as an award winning Argentine thriller just isn’t there  in this Julia Roberts vehicle.

How does her fellow FBI agent, Chiwetel Ejofor break the news that her daughter’s been murdered?

There’s no denying Roberts’ passionate performance in the least glamorous role of her career.

But the mystery expects us to believe too much on faith.

Her partner disappears for 13 years, returning with a startling break in the investigation. He claims to have pinpointed the suspect who killed Roberts’ daughter.

Cynical moviegoers may have trouble swallowing such devotion along with Its far-fetched premise.

More troubling still, is the haphazard storytelling and keeping track of whether the action is in the past or the present?

Only Roberts’ obsession with finding the killer keeps the film moving.

And then there’s the lethargic directing which only compound the confusion and the credibility of the characters.

The surprise ending is supposed to leave us breathless…My reaction was more like Oh, really?

“Secret In Their Eyes” misses the mark with 2 stars.  Another case of a messed up retread..
