SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WWLP) — One person is dead and another man is under arrest after a five car accident on I-91 southbound in Springfield Sunday morning.
The crash occurred on I-91 southbound in Springfield, by Exit 9 at around 2:15 Sunday morning.
State Police say 26-year-old James Sexton of Springfield rear-ended another car while trying to switch lanes when it wasn’t safe to do so. Sexton’s car rear-ended the Nissan Xterra in front of it. As a result, the Nissan Xterra rolled over and the 26-year-old’s car burst into flames.
Shortly afterwards, a driver in a 2002 Mercury Sable drove into the accident, hitting the driver of the Nissan Xterra, then driving away from the crash.
Sgt. Tom Ryan said the 21-year-old man driving the Nissan Xterra was rushed to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance, where he later died. His identity isn’t being released until his family has been notified.
Sgt. Ryan told 22News Sexton, who allegedly is responsible for the crash, is facing several charges including operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, following too closely, and making an unsafe lane change. He will be arraigned at the Hampden County Hall of Justice on Monday.
Police are still searching for the driver on the Mercury Sable that fled from the crash.
