Pynchon Awards celebrates 100 year anniversary in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Several Western Massachusetts residents were honored Thursday night for their distinguished service within the community.

Thursday marked the 100th year of the Pynchon Awards. Hundreds gathered at the Springfield museums as five recipients received the “Medal for Distinguished Service to the Community.”

Sci Tech’s band director and recipient, Gary Bernice, told 22News it’s an honor not just for him, but for all of his students.

Bernice said, “It’s really discouraging when they’re working hard, they’re trying to make a difference in their community and they’re not being recognized. So something like this really empowers them, not just empowers me, it empowers them to keep going, to mentor their peers and become role models for each other.”

Harold Grinspoon, Ronn and Donna Johnson, and Sue Ellen Panitch were the night’s other recipients.
