Navy rear admiral, Chicopee native, remembered as a pioneer

Rear Admiral Frances Shea-Buckley was director of Navy Nurse Corps

Rear Admiral Frances Shea Buckley was honored Thursday at Chicopee’s American Legion Post 275.

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Rear Admiral Frances Shea-Buckley of Chicopee was buried Thursday at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, but the passing of the 89 year-old Nurse Corps officer was also observed in her hometown.

Rear Admiral Shea-Buckley was a lifetime member of Chicopee’s American Legion Post 275. Her comrades honored her on the day of her burial for her service to her country, and the part she played in empowering women.

“Back in the day she was in, that was an incredible thing for a lady to be able to do. So in my eyes, she was one of the few people that broke the glass ceiling so others could follow in her path,” said Louis Brault, Commander of American Legion Post 275.

Rear Admiral Shea-Buckley passed away in July, after more than 30 years in the Navy, including service during the Vietnam War, and four years as director of the Navy Nurse Corps.
