SPRINGFIELD Mass. (WWLP) – At least 30 students from local colleges and universities were in either France or Paris during the attacks. 22News contacted eight of our local colleges and universities.
Many of them have study abroad programs where local students are taking classes in France. Others have foreign exchange programs where France has sent students to learn on our campuses, like Western New England University in Springfield.
Spokeman Brian Zelasko told 22News the university has a close partnership with the I.E.S.E.G. A Business School in Paris, France. Right now there are 10 French students living on the campus.
WNEU Sophomore Jennifer Zazzarino told 22News, “It’s just shocking to me because you never really think that things like that can happen and they are not real and then you see it happen and it’s heartbreaking that things like this can really exist and people can really do that.”
All of the colleges and universities told 22News they been in contact with their students in France and they are all safe.
At Smith College, French students on campus are being offered special support services and a vigil will be held on Monday to pay tribute to the victims.
