CHICOPEE Mass. (WWLP) – Traditionally as the leaves come off the trees we pick them up off our lawns, but there is a reason why you might want to let them stay right where they are.
According to the National Wildlife Federation for nature’s sake you may not want to pick those leaves up off your lawn.
While most of us rake up the leaves or blow them off our lawns, the National Wildlife Federation is recommending you put your rake down. They say leaves and debris account for 33 million tons of the nation’s solid waste, which leads to more greenhouse gases.
They say the leaves also help protect wildlife by providing food, shelter and nesting material for things like caterpillars, birds and reptiles.
But if you insist on picking up those leaves and want to be more environmentally friendly you may want to mulch them.
A safe alternative of not bagging them would be to go over them with your lawn mower. You can’t wait until all the leaves come down. You’ve got to stay on top of it, run them over with the lawn mower with a high setting and they mulch in nice.
One of the downside of not getting the leaves off your lawn, it could smother your grass and lead to dead spots.
