SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Moving trucks are constantly coming and going from the Springfield Rescue Mission on Bliss Street. It is expected to take at least several weeks for the Rescue Mission to move into its new home at the former Orr Cadillac on Mill Street in the South End.
The moving process affects the annual underwear donation drive for the homeless. Donors are urged to wait and bring the underclothing to the new site after December 1. It is an article of clothing that people who are homeless, such as Jorge Rodriguez, say they desperately need.
“We’re constantly on the street. We find it very difficult to maintain ourselves. It’s very difficult to go day to day finding a place we can actually stay,” Rodriguez said.
The Rescue Mission’s 53 year-old home will be torn down for the MGM casino project.
