SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield leaders and other elected officials gathered in the North End on Tuesday morning to honor the legacy of a woman who dedicated her life to the city. Barbara Rivera passed away in 2005, after decades of service and activism in the city’s North End neighborhood.
Her life was celebrated with an honorary dedication of Plainfield Street in her name. Riveras’s eldest daughter Janet told 22News what ‘Barbara Rivera Way’ means to their family. She explained that her mother would be glad “To know that she actually helped make this road, and that her grandchildren will see it, and her great-grandchildren. It’s a wonderful legacy.”
Rivera served as the executive director of the New North Citizens Council for more than three decades. The community center offers care to children, the elderly, the homeless, and others in need.
