Holyoke residents discuss community safety with mayoral candidate

The event was held at The Dam Café

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke mayoral candidate Francis O’Connell hosted an event Tuesday evening where community members had the chance to hear from Sherriff Michael Ashe and Ed Cassie of the Hampden County Sherriff’s Department.

Dozens of Holyoke residents were at The Dam Café on Tuesday; the topic of discussion was public safety, particularly in the “South Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative.” They discussed what steps have been taken in the City to fight crime thus far and what more needs to be done to continue.

Residents also had a chance to raise questions about what’s being done to keep the community safe.

O’Connell said, “I think a smart thing to do is to gather experts like we did tonight (Tuesday), these are the top people in their field; Captain Febo, Sheriff Ashe, and Ed Cassie. Get their thoughts have them share them with me and the community, it’s a home run for Holyoke.”

Other topics discussed were neighborhood watch programs and community policing.
