“Freeheld”

A look at the Movies

Rated PG-13
1 hour 50 minutes

Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon, Steve Carell

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – As far as I’m concerned, Julianne Moore has overtaken Meryl Streep as America’s highest achieving actress.

The same sex love story “Freeheld” features an unforgettable Julianne Moore performance. It’s the true story of a small town Police Officer who faces the worst kind of discrimination.

The picture’s set several years before Gay marriage. Moore and Ellen Page can only rely on being recognized as domestic partners.

But now, Moore’s dying of Cancer, and in a world without bigotry, the bureaucrat wouldn’t think twice about doing the right thing, and granting her partner Moore’s Police pension, the way they would without question if they were a Heterosexual couple.

Julianne Moore’s heartbreaking performance is hardly accomplished in a vacuum.

Ellen Page is every bit as good as her devoted lover. There’s solid support from the great character actor, Michael Shannon as a sympathetic Police Officer.

And Steve Carell makes the most of his brief appearance as a Rabble rousing advocate for a good cause.

You’ll find “Freeheld” in theaters that don’t discriminate audiences searching for heartfelt social drama.

Look, between Julianne Moore’s outstanding acting and the picture’s Impassioned Inspirational plea, “Freeheld” can’t miss getting 4 stars. You’ll leave the theater feeling all fired up as well as deeply satisfied.
