Head Start receives $2 million grant

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield families celebrated the announcement of grant funding that will set their kids up for success. Congressman Richard Neal was at the Springfield Head Start to award more than $2 million dollars for early education expansion.

Over the next several months, 11 infant and toddler classrooms will open throughout Springfield. Head Start Executive Director Janis Santos told 22News that the program makes a huge difference for families, and that these kids are ready for kindergarten.

“Research shows that if children are ready for that first experience and its successful, they will most likely stay in school and graduate,” Santos explained. “That’s success for children.” The grant will be used to serve close to 90 infants and toddlers in Springfield. Santos said the slots are already filled and they’ve had long wait lists for quite some time.
