Investigators looking into cause of deadly Chicopee fire

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – The state fire marshal’s office is working with Chicopee firefighters to determine the cause of a deadly fire over the weekend in the city’s Fairview neighborhood.

Chicopee Police Officer Mike Wilk told 22News that three people were able to escape the house at 82 Montcalm Street Sunday morning, but two residents- 87 year-old Brigette Niebergail and her son, 60 year-old Mark Boucher– did not survive.

The fire started at around 8:00 Sunday morning, and up a large black cloud of smoke. Neighbors, family members, and friends stood outside for hours in the unseasonably cold weather as firefighters worked to put out the flames.

The Pioneer Valley Church of Christ, located across the street, cancelled their Sunday morning service to cater to the victims’ needs.
