Massachusetts measuring impact of fantasy sports

Treasurer says she must consider all competition to lottery

BOSTON, Mass. (WWLP) – State Treasurer Deb Goldberg says she is exploring whether the Massachusetts Lottery should get involved in fantasy sports betting.

Fantasy sports betting websites DraftKings and FanDuel have become popular recently because they allow players to play daily fantasy sports for cash prizes.

As the head of the lottery commission, Goldberg said she always has to consider possible competition to the lottery. “We said we better get up to speed on what this is, what it could impact, and it is our responsibility to be thinking about what is best for every city and town.”

Governor Charlie Baker said Wednesday that Goldberg should remain focused on the lottery.
