SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The multi-state Powerball lottery game is changing the way the system works to make bigger jackpots.
The new formula went into place on Sunday. Players will select 5 out of 69 white-ball numbers and one out of 26 ‘powerball’ numbers.
While odds of winning the jackpot went from 1/175 to 1/292, the overall odds of winning a prize will improve from 1/ 31 to 1/24.
The first drawing with the new system took place Wednesday night at 10:59. Wednesday’s winning numbers were 18-30-40-48-52 (Powerball – 09)
Tickets are still two dollars, and the power play option remains at one dollar.
Still, not everyone is sold, even with the better odds. Jason Hildreth, who works in Springfield, told 22News, “If you play you lose your money, so I choose to keep it. You win if you don’t play. I mean, if it gets crazy high, I’ll buy one once in a while, but not for the most part.”
Each state that participates in the Powerball lottery receives 50 percent of what they sell. The other 50 percent goes toward prizes.
