Clerk tackled would-be robber in Springfield

The clerk tackled the woman, subdued her and held her until police arrived

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A store clerk fought back and stopped a robbery in an Indian Orchard convenience store in Springfield, Wednesday night.

Springfield Police Lt. Brian Keenan told 22News a masked woman stormed into the Racing Mart at 363 Main Street in the Orchard just before 8:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The clerk told police the woman walked behind the counter and tried to open the cash register. Lt. Keenan said the clerk tackled her, subdued her and held her until police arrived; “The clerk did a good job.”

Police only identified the suspect as a 34-year-old Springfield woman. She’s been charged with unarmed robbery, and will go before a judge in Springfield District Court on Thursday.

The clerk was not hurt.
