(NBC News) The number of injuries sustained on zip lines has skyrocketed.
A report from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital states there were nearly 17,000 zip line related trips to an emergency room between 1997 and 2012.
“One of the things that really struck us about this study is how serious the injuries were,” said Tracy Mehan who works at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Most zip-line related accidents occurred since 2009, and most were kids who fell or collided with trees or structures ended up with broken bones.
According to the Association For Challenge Course Technology, 18 states have laws regulating commercial zip line safety while safety standards are voluntary for other states.
