Self-injectors offer overdose help

(KPRC) Recent Texas legislation had lawmakers debating whether an at-home injection of an opioid antagonist will save lives or provide a crutch to someone with a history of addiction.

Dr. John Fermo, of the opioid addiction treatment center at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center,
said all patients prescribed chronic opiates are also prescribed something like Evzio at his hospital.

The at-home injection Evzio comes with audio instructions. It can be given to someone suspected of overdosing on prescription pain pills.

Then it instructs you to get to the emergency room.

“A lot of time the first responders, by the time they get to the patient in need, they’re too late, so this naloxone will give them time to get to the help they need,” Fermo said.
