6 deaths blamed on historic flooding in South Carolina

Drivers, state worker among the dead

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) – South Carolina Emergency Management Department has confirmed six deaths related to the flooding caused by massive rains over the weekend.

According to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts, the deaths include a woman whose body was found near Sunset Boulevard in the state capital of Columbia early Sunday.

A South Carolina Department of Transportation employee was also killed Sunday while overseeing work.

According to Watts, 45-year-old Timothy Wayne Gibson was on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia.

The highway patrol updated its toll Monday, saying four have been killed on roads in weather related incidents.

“One motorist struck a tree,” said Derrec Becker with SCEMD. “One drowned in a vehicle when floodwaters rushed so quickly.”
