Holyoke organization remembers domestic violence victims, survivors

The organization celebrates survivors who've left abusive relationships

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A Holyoke-based organization that helps abused and battered women marked the start of Domestic Violence Awareness month Thursday night.

An estimated 75 supporters attended a Womanshelter / Companeras event at Holyoke Heritage State Park Thursday night.

Entitled, “Remember, Celebrate and Support,” Womanshelter is remembering the 13 domestic violence victims murdered in Massachusetts this year, as well as celebrating survivors who’ve left abusive relationships.

“Womanshelter Companeras is there to support those who are still unfortunately in abusive relationships and that we’re here to help,” Womanshelter Companeras Executive Director Karen Cavanaugh told 22News.

Womanshelter / Companeras offers shelter, counseling and support to domestic violence victims and survivors throughout western Massachusetts.
