SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Hundreds of UMass students fanned out across Western Massachusetts for a day of community service. 22News caught up with one group helping neighbors in Springfield.
UMass student volunteers worked side by side with neighbors on Walnut Street. They prepared the next phase of a community garden which has become the pride of the neighborhood.
Amy Gebo from the town of Spencer has been looking forward to getting involved in this UMass day of service. “Today we all came out gardening in the community,” said Gebo. “Our site today was coming here and helping create a rain garden.”
Moses Ramos-Hernandez lives in the North End of Springfield, but he’s been working for the agency that oversees community gardening in the Old Hill and the Six Corners/Maple High neighborhoods. He told 22News, it’s been very beneficial for him. “The skills that I get like handling money, customer service and all that stuff which has helped me get other jobs.”
From Springfield to Amherst and Hatfield to Holyoke, hundreds of UMass students spent their day involved with what’s important to the people of western Massachusetts.
