Man hospitalized after overnight fire

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – A man is in the hospital Saturday evening after a fire early Saturday morning in Springfield.

Springfield Fire spokesman Dennis Leger told 22News, firefighters were called to 44 Larchmont Street around 2 o’clock Saturday morning. When they got there, they found a mattress on fire in a bedroom filled with smoke.

According to Leger, firefighters found a middle-aged man on the floor of the bedroom unconscious and took him out of the house.

Emergency medical workers had to perform rescue breathing on the man.

He was rushed to Baystate Medical Center with life threatening injuries he suffered from breathing smoke.

Firefighters are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
