PHILADELPHIA (Media General) – Pope Francis is sending a message of unity and connection between people from all walks of life. College friends Claudia Kenyon and Jane Maugeri took that message to heart.
After first seeing Pope John Paul II together in 1979, the friends reunited this weekend in Philadelphia to do it all again.
Kenyon and her husband came from Waterford, CT and Maugeri traveled from Stratford, NJ.
The women try to see each other several times a year, but call this one extra special.
“Every time we get together, we go to mass,” says Maugeri.
36 years ago, Kenyon rode on Maugeri’s shoulders through the streets of Boston to capture pictures of the pope.
This time around, Kenyon promised her friend that she’ll just walk instead.
On Sunday, they’ll get to attend Pope Francis’s mass, thanks to the goodwill of a total stranger on the street who offered them tickets.
The friends say they will carry on this tradition of traveling to see the Pope. Next time the Pope comes to America, Kenyon says they’ll be together again and wearing shirts that read “L-O-V-E. P-O-P-E.”
