NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – There are a lot of unique things to see in downtown Northampton, but giant animals are not usually among them. That is exactly what some people saw early Friday morning, however.
Northampton Police Detective Corey Robinson told 22News that patrolling officers had been following a moose that was roaming around the downtown area during the early morning hours. They also received a report of a moose sighting along the railroad tracks at about 6:30.
A 22News viewer sent us a picture through our Report It feature of a moose along the tracks off Market Street.
Robinson said that at this point, the moose’s whereabouts are unknown.
According to the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, there are an estimated 850-950 moose in the state, and while sightings in densely-populated areas are still fairly rare, they have become more common as the moose population has grown.
