AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) – The Dalai Lama won’t be coming to Western Massachusetts after all. He’s canceled his entire U.S. tour for health reasons.

The Dalai Lama arrived in the United States this week for a medical evaluation, but his office released a statement Friday saying doctors have advised him to take complete rest.

He had scheduled stops at Amherst College, Smith College in Northampton, and UMass.

“I was really looking forward to seeing him talk. I had a ticket. I stood in line for a ticket for quite awhile,” said UMass student Kate Barvick. “Definitely a big loss that I’m not going to get to see him. It’s really disappointing.”

UMass said people who purchased tickets to see the Dalai Lama can receive refunds.

He’ll be traveling back to India next week.
