WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Thursday is Massachusetts Day at the Big E and the Massachusetts building on the Avenue of States has been attracting thousands of visitors.
The State Treasurer’s unclaimed property booth is a popular place. The state has accumulated $2 billion left in abandoned bank accounts, insurance settlements and safe deposit boxes.
Hundreds of fair goers checked to see if the state owed them money. Dan Reeve of Spencer found, for the second consecutive year, that he could claim some of that money.
Reeve told 22News that last year “I found that I had over $800 owed me, and we got that money after a few weeks coming here. I thought I’d try my name here this year. It’s only five dollars but five dollars is five dollars.”
One couple found they’re owed $5,000. And another couple can expect a $4,000 check in the mail.
