SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s a story we first told you about back in June. Now Springfield’s Chief Development Officer Kevin Kennedy told 22News the city is interested in listening to a pitch from the PawSox owners.
Plans to move the Red Sox AAA team from Pawtucket to Providence have fallen apart. The PawSox are still looking for a new home and a new stadium. In Springfield’s Vision 2017, an Economic development dream board, they included a baseball stadium where the Peter Pan Bus Station is located.
MGM is also keeping tabs on this, their company just bought the naming rights to a “AA” baseball stadium in Mississippi across from their casino there. MGM Springfield President Mike Mathis said, “We’re monitoring it very closely; for a long time we believed that the opportunity was going to go to Rhode Island, now it sounds like there’s a potential for a new site and we’re monitoring it.”
MGM Springfield also has a working relationship with Fenway Sports Management, part of the PawSox ownership group.
No word from the city if they would be willing to pay for a new stadium.
