Springfield man accused of robbing Holyoke businesses

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke Police arrested a 45-year-old man suspected of robbing multiple businesses on Hampden Street, Thursday morning.

Holyoke Police Lt. Jim Albert told 22News Samuel Velez of Springfield was arrested after he allegedly broke into the “Susan’s Café,” at 3:07 a.m. Thursday, and stole the cash in the register by smashing it open in the parking lot.

Officers found Velez holding a pair of gloves and a bottle. He attempted to run but was later arrested.

While officers investigated the area, Lt. Albert said they found a broken window and blood stains at the “Elizur’s Pub”. It was suspected that Velez had also entered the Pub, broke the cash register drawer, and stolen a bottle of liquor.

Velez was charged with the following:

  • B&E in the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony (Susan’s Café)
  • B&E in the Nighttime with Intent to Commit a Felony (Elizur’s Pub)
  • Larceny from a Building (2 Counts)
  • Malicious Destruction of Property over $250 (2 Counts)
  • Resisting Arrest

Velez was arraigned in Holyoke District Court later on Thursday and was held on $5,000 bail at the Hampden County Jail in Ludlow.
