Springfield DPW discusses pedestrian safety around construction

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The Springfield Department of Public Works is telling residents how the multiple construction projects in the city affect their safety.

The Armory-Quadrangle Civic Association updated Springfield residents Thursday night on the I-91 construction, MGM Springfield construction, and other local roadwork.

DPW Director Chris Cignoli talked about crosswalk safety because of previous pedestrian accidents. “There’s an issue in this area about pedestrian crossing, especially on State Street, and also bike lanes in the area,” said Cignoli. “So we are trying to figure out ways to increase the safety of pedestrians going across the street.”

The DPW also discussed the proposed Rapid Bus Transit System on State St. and Boston Rd. that would operate during Springfield’s many construction projects.
