Greenfield crash caused loss of phone service in Northfield

NORTHFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Land line telephone service went down in the town of Northfield for several hours Monday, due to an early morning truck crash in nearby Greenfield.

Northfield Fire Chief Skip Dunnell told 22News that Verizon crews worked to repair the lines that came down as a result of the crash on Route 2 near Factory Hollow Road. Dunnell had originally estimated that service would not be restored until about 6:00 P.M., but service was back by about 1:00.

All 911 calls were automatically diverted to the Northfield Fire Department during the outage, and residents were asked to call 911 on a cell phone to contact the police department, or go to the police department directly.

The crash has shut down Route 2 between Adams Road and the Gill-Montague Bridge, and that stretch is not expected to be re-opened until Tuesday.
