Sweatworking: Business on the mats

(NBC News) Some business deals and connections are still made on the golf course or over a scotch, but a new way to network and meet new people is gaining popularity.

It’s called “sweatworking.”

NC Yoga Bar owner Lindsay Cunningham says doing yoga with potential clients and co-workers takes the intimidation out of typically stuffy office meet-and-greets.

“You’re getting to know people on a more personal level. You’re sweating right next to them. They don’t have to go in work clothes, you know, they are come as you are, have fun, and just be yourself,” Cunningham explains.

That’s not the only place to make new connections.

Charlotte, North Carolina’s Olde Mecklenburg Brewery calls their gatherings “Yoga on Tap”.

It attracts more than 500 yogis in a single night. They practice their downward dogs outside before downing their beer.

Beer is a perk. Organizers say on these nights yoga is the draw.

“It’s not about coming and getting drunk, it’s about coming to do something good for yourself as well as being together as a community and getting to know people in the community that otherwise you wouldn’t have met,” says Olde Mecklenburg’s Debbie Mijatovic.

Yoga isn’t the only way to “sweatwork.”

Many businesses have employees go on runs, walks or bike rides, too.
