Springfield residents warn against building a Dollar Tree Store

The lot is properly zoned for commercial use

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Residents in East Forest Park say placing a Dollar Tree Store in their neighborhood would be a safety hazard.

An estimated 25 neighbors and city leaders gathered at the intersection of Island Pond Road and Allen Street to protest plans for a Dollar Tree Store to be built there.

Citing a lack of crosswalks, the residents fear someone will get hurt by adding to the traffic volume there.

Kathleen Murphy, an East Forest Park resident, told 22News, “I’m out here to say that I’m supporting safety. And I wouldn’t want it to be on my conscience if something happened here, and I had done nothing?”

According to Springfield City Councilor Bud Williams, “Three or four corners as you see, the traffic. And there’s a lot of foot traffic. To us it just doesn’t make sense.”

Councilor Williams said the lot’s properly zoned for commercial use, but that he’s urging the DPW to “not approve” construction of a Dollar Tree Store there for safety reasons.
