Airbag deployed when car hit railroad bridge in Springfield

The entire front of the car was smashed on impact

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – An unidentified driver was taken to the hospital Thursday night after his car hit a railroad bridge abutment in downtown Springfield.

A compact station wagon slammed into the structural support for the railroad overpass on East Columbus Avenue near Gridiron Street at about 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

There was an airbag deployment, and the entire front of the car was smashed in by the impact with the abutment.

Springfield Police Sgt. Arthur D’Ambrosia told 22News it didn’t appear the driver was badly hurt.

Traffic was slowed on East Columbus Ave. for a time, but the street stayed open.
