UMASS, Mass (WWLP) – The UMass Dining services kicked off the new school year with a major cookout today.
The Mall outside Herter Hall at UMass, Amherst was converted to a huge barbecue early tonight. It was the annual “Welcome Back Barbecue” for the freshman class of 2019.
They were expecting to feed as many as ten thousand students, staff and community members.
Phillipe Janvier, UMass sophomore told 22News, “Just a little cookout that they hand out for free. They close off the dining halls so everybody has a chance to be together in one setting with music and have a good time.”
The UMass Residential Dining Director said all of the chicken served was raised humanely and is 100% antibiotic Free, and they only serve grass-fed beef.
He said UMass is committed to western mass agriculture, with 30 percent of all produce being locally grown.
