Worries about rabid raccoons at Granby park

Two rabid raccoons were recently discovered at Dufresne Park

GRANBY, Mass. (WWLP) – A health official in the town of Granby is urging residents to take precautions with their dogs and children when they visit Dufresne Park. Two raccoons that were found in the park had tested positive for rabies, and Board of Health Member Lee Lalonde says they suspect there could be more rabid raccoons in the area.

Lalonde said that they are requesting dogs be kept on a leash at all times in the park, and that owners don’t let them get anywhere near raccoons.

“We have to believe there’s a small group of raccoons that have been infected- until we get through that area I don’t know how it can happen,” Lalonde said.

People that 22News spoke with Friday said that they would continue to come to Dufresne Park, but they will take special caution with their children and their pets.

The two rabid raccoons found in the park have been euthanized.
