SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police are charging a third suspect in connection with the killing of a 20 year-old man in late June. According to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney, 24 year-old Anthony Luna of Springfield was arrested on a charge of murder at his 144 White Street home Thursday morning.

Twenty year-old Chris Calvente died on the afternoon of June 30, following a shooting on Prospect Street. Delaney says that the victim, who had been shot in the chest, died on Allendale Street as he was being taken to the hospital. A second shooting victim had received gunshot wounds to his hand and back, but survived.

Police had arrived at the site of the shooting quickly, arresting brothers Erik and Yeyson Rivera, and discovering two handguns. Delaney says that homicide detectives continued to investigate the murder, and discovered that there was a third suspect- who they identified as Luna.

Police received a warrant for Luna’s arrest, and at around 8:45 Thursday morning, Delaney says warrant apprehension unit detectives and state troopers went to White Street to make the arrest. Luna surrendered without incident, and was held following his arraignment at Springfield District Court.

Prior to the killing, suspect Yeyson Rivera had been charged with murder back in 2005, and had been sentenced to seven and a half to 10 years in prison.

Calvente’s murder marked the 13th homicide of 2015 in the city of Springfield, as of September 4, there have been 14 homicides in the city so far this year.
